How much CPU is needed to set a video as moving desktop wallpaper?

This Video Wallpaper Animator does not require more CPU than a normal movie player. On an Intel i3 at 2.2 GHz the CPU utilization is under 0.1% for a 640×480 movie.

Can I set an MKV as video wallpaper?

Video Wallpaper Animator only supports AVI (VFW) files. However, with proper video codecs such as FFDShow filter, other formats might be supported as well.

The best option would be to use a converter like FormatFactory (pure freeware, no ads) to convert from MOV, MP4, MKV, Flash, ASF, etc. to AVI (make sure you choose DivX or MP4 as codec in the converter).
