I want the old behavior of "autodetect background color"

Do you think that something is missing from BioniX Wallpaper?

I want the old behavior of "autodetect background color"

Postby sbillard » 13 Oct 2009, 00:44

I am giving the 6.69 Beta a tryout and have a couple of issues.

1. The log seems not to be updated to disk while BioniX is running. The symptom I get is that the log Window does not show current activities nore does the log file on disk contain these activities. When I exit BioniX the log file on disk contains the records from the session. When I start BioniX up again the log window will show the items from the previous session (but not ones from the current session.)

2. The progress bar for the timer change seems not to update until the wallpaper change actually occurs. That is, the bar remains empty for most of the countdown. Then it quickly goes from empty to full as the wallpaper changes.

3. I cannot seem to get the background color to work. On 6.1.7 RC I had the value for the background color set to 50. My images would have a two color background, the top "matching" the top part of the image and the bottom matching the bottom part of the image. I have played around with the new settings but got only occasional backgrounds set other than the default value. Current values are 5 for the threshold and 8 for the tolerance. I think that the common denominator for when the background is applied and when it is not is the image size vs screen size. Images which reach the top & bottom of the screen seem to have left/right backgound colors set. Images which do not touch any border of the screen have the default background. (My images are set not to resize.) If I select smart size with "enlarge to remove empt spaces" reset then I get left/right background colors just as with the images that naturally reached between the top/bottom of the screen.

This may be a Vista virtualization problem (in case you are using vista - if not, we will take a look at it).

We will take a look at this also.

This is intended. For most images the top (the sky of a landscape for example) is different than the bottom (the ground).

These are good values.

This is also intended. If the image is way smaller than your desktop (vertical and horizontal) then the color used for top will "meet" the color used for bottom in the middle of the screen. The combination can be quite ugly sometimes (green meets pink :) ). So, no automatic background color for small images.

1. I am using Vista. However, prior versions of BioniX did not behave this way, I could always see the latest logged items

3. What I am saying is that I no longer get the dual color top/bottom background. When the image has background on all sides what I get is the background color I have selected for when Bionix cannot determine the color automatically. The only time I get the background colors set automatically is when the picture reaches from the top to the bottom. (I don't know if it might work if the picture reaches from the left to the right border, I have no pictures that would do this.)

So as a summay, if I set "smart size" the images will span top to bottom and get auto colored left and right borders. If I set "original size" the pictures sit in the middle of the screen and the background color is the one I select with the button. This is different behavior from version 6.1.7. I never got ugly meeting colors. Maybe the old behavior could be an option?

Ok. We will post an example to explain why the old behavior has been abandoned.

Ok. The second image shows how the wallpaper will look like on a wide monitor (when there will be empty space on the left and right side of the image).

Solved. The text was there but it was black (on black background).

The progress bar for the timer change seems not to update until the wallpaper change actually occurs.

It is working perfectly on version 6.6.10. Please download this version (to be released soon) an let us know if it works.
The timer is set to intervals smaller than 5-10 seconds?

Why the old behavior was changed

I do understand why you changed it. But please also understand that I liked the old behaviro. (Even in the extreme example you show.) So, again, consider making it an option. (Actually, an even better option would be a gradient change from one color to the other.)

I have tried the 6.6.10 version. For me, the progress bar still shows no change until just when the wallpaper change is happening. At this point the progress bar quickly goes from "no progress shown" to "completed progress" then reverts to "no progress" all in the space of a few seconds. Testing was done with the interval at 30 seconds.

Thank you for the log fix.

The progress bar may be fixed in v6.11.
